As Bangkok gears up for Telecoms World Asia 2025, the region’s top telco minds are converging on one critical question: How will AI transform the future for telecoms?

From automation to initiative

Today’s telcos aren’t just connecting us; they’re shaping digital lifestyles. With 5G, IoT, and cloud-native services, only adaptive intelligence can keep up.

For years, Asian telcos have leaned on automation — chatbots, automated billing, and network alerts — to streamline operations. The turning point began around 2022, when telcos faced the perfect storm: exploding data traffic, 5G complexity, and customers demanding personalized experiences. The industry realized that reactive isn’t enough. They need networks that think.

Enter agentic AI: systems that don't just execute commands but make independent decisions. Imagine networks that:

  • Predict and prevent outages before they happen.
  • Reroute traffic milliseconds ahead of congestion.
  • Personalize experiences for millions simultaneously.

This is digital intuition at scale — networks that evolve as quickly as we do.

Asian telco test lab

Forward-thinking Asian telcos are unlocking new revenue streams with agentic AI, transforming networks into profitable platforms. Here's how:

Large telecom models (LTMs)

General-purpose LLMs aren’t built to handle the vast, highly specialized and unstructured data generated by telco networks, making it difficult for LLMs to process effectively. LTMs are purpose-built AI trained on the unique, complex telco network data — live system alerts, network diagrams, and streaming operational data. This specialization enables telcos to automate intricate processes and boost operational efficiency. SoftBank’s (Japan) LTM can optimize base station configurations in minutes (vs. days) with 90%+ accuracy, slashing manual effort and errors. As LTMs evolve, they’re set to become the backbone of next-gen, intelligent telco operations.

Smart network slicing

Telcos are using agentic AI to dynamically partition networks into customized "slices" for specific needs, optimizing resources in real time. Reliance Jio (India) is building an Open Telecom AI Platform that uses agentic AI to orchestrate dynamic slicing. Imagine a slice that instantly prioritizes ultra-low latency for a fleet of autonomous vehicles or guarantees bandwidth for an entire smart factory — all self-optimized in real time. Similarly, AIS (Thailand) employs AI-driven slicing for entertainment vs. industrial uses, ensuring seamless performance during peak events like concerts.

Predictive maintenance

Agentic AI is transforming network maintenance from a reactive chore into a proactive business opportunity. China Mobile has rolled out AI systems that predict 5G base-station faults hours in advance, then package that intelligence into managed services for factories, logistics hubs, and smart cities. Enterprises pay recurring fees to avoid costly downtime — turning a traditional cost centre into a profitable product.

Hyper-personalization at scale
By understanding individual behaviours, AI agents craft bespoke offers. SK Telecom (South Korea) launched Aster (A*), an agentic personal AI assistant (now in global beta). Aster doesn’t just answer questions — it understands intent, plans, and acts. That includes spotting when you’re about to travel and proactively offering the perfect data boost, or curating entertainment bundles based on your real-time habits.

What’s next?

Looking ahead, agentic AI is set to supercharge Asian telcos and unlock breakthroughs that redefine connectivity:

  • Self-healing networks that detect and repair glitches in seconds, slashing downtime and boosting reliability to unprecedented levels.
  • Hyper-personalized services that read customer patterns like a mind, delivering tailored experiences that feel intuitive and effortless.
  • Deeper ecosystem collaboration, where telcos team up with tech giants and agile startups to co-create game-changing solutions.

The future? A hyper-connected era of unprecedented efficiency, where networks evolve intelligently, customer loyalty soars, and new revenue horizons emerge.
