The Meeting Room Your Rep Never Enters

AI made your buyers faster at finding you and slower at buying from you. The delay moved somewhere your team has no visibility.
Vendor evaluation has overtaken research to become the longest stage of the B2B buying journey for the first time.
82% of buyers sourced software recommendations from an AI chatbot in the last two years, and review sites at 38% edged past chatbots at 37% as the top source shaping shortlists. Discovery now takes a single prompt.
Then it stops. The compression ends the moment a vendor is shortlisted, because everything after that is validation: proof, pricing, security review, and the internal case for spending the money.
The shortlist is the starting line.

Someone inside that company already wants to buy from you. They sat through the demo, they liked it, and now they have to fight for it in front of people who did not.
That person is your deal.
Start with security, because that is where deals sit longest. IT review is the single biggest source of delay, cited by 39% of buyers and half of all enterprise buyers. Write the data handling answer for a reviewer who has never spoken to anyone on your team, then hand it over before anybody asks.
Then follow the money. Finance now sits in 46% of software decisions, up from 31% a year ago. Your champion walks into that meeting carrying whatever cost case you gave them, and it has to work in their numbers.
Give them something with a name on it. A customer story from a company that looks like theirs gets forwarded. A capability deck stays on their laptop.
There are two sales in every deal now. Yours, and the one your champion runs inside their own company.
Only one of them shows up in your pipeline. What your forecast measures is your own activity, and the argument that settles the deal is being written by someone else.
Start by asking one question on your next call: who else has to approve this, and what will they ask? Most teams find that out when the deal stalls.
Then change what a stage means. Security cleared and finance briefed are real progress. A follow-up meeting booked only tells you the conversation continued.
The room stays closed to you. The deal that comes out of it belongs to whoever prepared the person who walked in.
