More from Twimbit

AI is reshaping the economy faster than most predicted, but unevenly. The pattern it’s leaving behind says something important about where human value truly lives.

The automation paradox

Over the past 2 years, AI agents have taken on work once considered highly specialised. Duolingo declared itself "AI-first" and began replacing contracted translators and writers with AI, stating it would only add headcount where teams "cannot automate more of their work." Financial modelling, competitive analysis, content generation: no longer purely human domains.

And yet, your hairdresser isn’t worried. Neither is your plumber or the nail technician who’s been fully booked for the past 3 months. The roles once written off as "low-skill" are proving to be automation-resilient.

A haircut is a conversation, a ritual, a relationship built over years of appointments. It can't be prompted away.

Relationships don’t have a prompt

A European insurer rebuilt its sales operation around AI agents: personalising campaigns across hundreds of customer segments, adapting scripts to buyer cues, and coaching reps in real time.

Conversion rates went 2 to 3 times higher. But the real story is simpler: AI absorbed everything that used to eat into a rep's day. The reps showed up to conversations better prepared, less stretched, and free to do the one thing AI couldn't: actually build the relationship.

The question worth asking isn't "will AI replace my team?" It's "what does my team get to focus on, now that AI handles the rest?"

Where the deal actually lives

AI now handles 30% of service cases autonomously, while human reps are being deliberately redirected toward high-stakes problems and trust-building. Think about it: the closer you get to the moment that actually matters, the more human the work becomes.

The human edge shows up in 3 places:

  • Executive relationships: No model replicates the credibility of a leader who has navigated a client’s hard quarters and shows up outside of renewal cycles.
  • Complex problem-solving: Reframing a client's challenge, bringing the right people in, co-building a solution. AI can prepare you for that conversation. It can't have it.
  • Trust recovery: When a deal stalls or a competitor moves in, a well-timed call from someone the client actually knows beats any automated follow-up.

The hairdresser's fully booked because she's irreplaceable. The best sales teams are building the same moat.

Before we wrap up
